Sénégal Map Talk Write & Discuss

Hey y'all! Been a minute since I got to record and share a little bit of what my classroom looks like.

This is a quick clip of a Write & Discuss activity I facilitated with one of my level 3 classes. We spent a solid 2 days doing a Map Talk of Sénégal, and today did some writing. The first half hour of class was writing about the geography, neighboring countries, etc.

One of the benefits of recording myself and watching/editing videos is that it really gives me some insight as to how much time we spent engaging in meaningful communication. I did my best to edit this video down and I still have 12 minutes.

I'm especially happy about the amount of time we spent talking about the percentages of people who identify as Muslim in the country. I mentioned playing "high/low" in a tweet the other day and received a few questions about what it is.

This is a great example of how you can work with numbers in a meaningful context and make it last a substantial amount of time. I also said in the tweetstorm, that I am a firm believer that it is not our job to "use culture to teach [insert structure/function/grammar thing]," but rather that is is my job to use structures/functions/grammar things to teach global, 21st century literacy.

Anyway, hope y'all enjoy! Let me know what you think.
