Hey y'all,
Hoping everybody is doing well! I wanted to share this really quickly...
Check out this really fun and engaging activity that gets students talking, moving, sharing their opinions, and diving into meaningful discussions! This one happens to be an intro to our unit on the effects of technology & social media use around the world.
Shoutout to my brother Justin Slocum-Bailey who first introduced me to this idea that I've been playing with and trying to see how it can best fit my classroom.
Step 1: Make a list of (opinion) statements aligned with the theme.
Step 2: Reveal each statement 1-by-1, and ask students to find a spot along an imaginary line that ranges from "I completely agree" to "I completely disagree."
Step 3: Randomize to find students to ask some follow-up questions about their own opinions, how it compares to the overall opinions within the class according to where everyone is standing, and whatever else comes to mind.
It's an amazing way to introduce new vocabulary and structures. Also, I often hear teachers asking about what Comprehensible Input strategies look like in more advanced level classes. This is a great strategy to foster acquisition and proficiency growth for students who are ready.
Oh! and AfroFranco Teacher Collective PLC members, check out the full 20-minute video in the forum where you can see just how vibrant this discussion really got with my French 4 Honors students.
Can't wait to talk about it with y'all!
Anyhow, give it a shot, lemme know how it goes. Thanks for reading!
