Aïd el-Kébir

Hey y'all,

Here's a little snippet of my level 3 Honors students discussing Aïd el-Kébir after having watched this video.

I really love setting them up to see their wins with authentic texts/videos. I've been thinking a lot about what our actual goals are as language teachers, and how so many of our practices are counterproductive.

I have my kids watch these often relatively short and straightforward authentic videos, and answer simple true/false quizzes on them. The benefits are two-fold: first, by providing them the true/false questions in advance, whether they be in English or in language pulled directly from the video, it helps to establish purpose for them as they engage with the text. This is an age-old literacy/reading specialist strategy that we can use in the modern language classroom. Secondly, the confidence boost that they get when they are successfully demonstrating comprehension of an authentic text intended for native speakers of the target language is enough to encourage them to keep going and to trust the process!

I have gotten to the point with this class in particular where they make fun of me and give my "I'm so proud of y'all for being able to understand that video" speech for me.

Anyway, hope you enjoy!
