Quick Tip to Increase Student Production

Alright, I know the (CI) purists may get upset with me, but hear me out… As we’re doing our thing in class, getting choral responses from the whole group, circling and all that, but then you let ClassDojo pick someone for a Personalized Question/Answer or whatever. You want to encourage growth in “text type” without triggering that affective filter, you know?

I like this method because there’s no such thing as losing points. Everything is oriented toward the positive, instead of penalties for “unwanted” behaviors.

And like I said, I’m explicit about it not being their grade, it’s just a way for me to keep track of things (you can also pull reports on each student to see who did what and when). Hearing the little sound effects when points are earned has had a Pavlovian type of effect. AND! It’s turned into the best type of friendly competition within the class, to see who is leading with the most points.

Again, it’s just a way to encourage students to communicate in larger chunks of language and to reward that effort in an equitable, non-threatening way. Give it a shot and lemme know how it goes!
